Responding to the Coming "Amnesty" Executive Order

The Word of God in Jeremiah

I love God's Word. I hope you do too. I love knowing that because of what Jesus accomplished for me in the gospel, earning my righteousness by living a perfect life, absorbing the penalty for my sin at the cross, and rising from the dead to secure my new life in him, I can sit at his feet and commune with the living God in a completely restored relationship. And I love that this is always possible no matter how sinful I feel - rightly or wrongly (Heb. 4:16). Seeing Jesus in me, God wants me to come to Him at all times and in every circumstance. The Word of God assures me of this, and it is comforting beyond words....Keep Reading

The Gospel and the Military

Being a Christian in modern military life could be compared to a salmon making the tough journey up stream. There are times it can feel as though everything in life is coming at you trying to drive you in the mainstream direction, opposite of what you're striving towards. There are so many hardships and uncertainties: low finances, multiple moves, many times having a lack of physical support from either family or close friends, having to adjust to new schedules and different cultures around you, searching for Gospel centered churches, having an uncertain future, and even adjusting to different weather and driving conditions....Keep Reading

Kill Them or Convert Them: Duck Dynasty Styled Evangelism

There are reasons to respect Phil Robertson, the patriarch of the family at the center of AMC’s blockbuster hit Duck Dynasty. He was a good enough athlete to start over 4-time Super Bowl champion Terry Bradshaw while in college even though he didn’t think much about practice. He was, by his own admission, a borderline alcoholic and druggie until he was miraculously saved in his late twenties. He’s a self-made man who went from the backwoods of Louisiana to become a TV star and a multi-millionaire on the basis of a business that sells duck calls. He is articulate and uncompromising in expressing his testimony....Keep Reading

Training New Disciples to Make Disciples

Like my good friend Alex Thermenos, you may have thought that last week's post was the final post in this series on making disciples. Now this is understandable. I mean, after touching base with the lost, talking to them, enjoying meals with them at your dinner table, teaching them how the gospel relates to their lives, tying them into the fellowship of the church, and calling them to trust in Jesus alone for their salvation what else could disciple-making entail? Well, I believe the Bible reveals to us one more crucial step. Today I will close our series on making disciples by explaining how training new disciples to make disciples themselves is a necessary final step in this process....Keep Reading

Calling the Lost to Trust in Jesus

This is what making disciples of Jesus all boils down to. In fact, there is a real sense in which this is the only absolutely necessary step in the process to making disciples. Everything about this process hinges on whether or not our lost friends, family members, co-workers, and neighbors, by God's sovereign grace, place their trust in Jesus, and Jesus alone, for their personal salvation. This is the step that we've been building towards all along. And from the beginning of the process this is what we must be prayerfully aiming for....Keep Reading

Welcome to the Priesthood

For hours our group of foreign and Chinese teachers drove south through rice paddies and terraced tea hills to the famed Yellow Mountains of east central China. My initial fascination worn thin through endless unfamiliarity, I felt I had been dropped on another planet and wished I could switch off my senses. But we kept driving and entered the town of Mt. Jihua (pronounced jo-hwah), ringed by eighty-one temples. Throngs of Buddhist worshipers crowded the streets for the September pilgrimage....Keep Reading

Errands, Tantrums, and the Gospel

My sister’s baby had a fever, so I ran by her house the other week to pick up two of her kids and take them with me on my errands to give her a little break. They were prattling on like little girls do, talking about nothing and everything. On our way home, we were listening to a local Christian radio station and Everfound’s “God of the Impossible” came on. Now, I’m not a fan of Christian radio per se, but the lyrics got me thinking about my life and what I was doing with it. “Here I am, Lord send me. I won’t look back cause I was made to be a part of the impossible, you’re God of the impossible…I dare to believe in incredible things, I’m ready to go, ready to go.” As I was driving, listening to mindless chatter and my son babbling in the back seat, I thought, “Gosh, there is so much I could do with my life. I could go to Africa and take care of orphans, or go back to Haiti and work at the orphanage there. Or even Bolivia, learning Spanish and preaching the Gospel in La Paz. Yet here I am, going to Walmart and buying groceries and living a pretty mindless life. I want to do GREAT THINGS!” All the while the song kept playing in the background…here I am, Lord send me....Keep Reading

Tying Lost Friends into the Church

In reading last week's post, some of you may have wondered how by yourself you could ever teach your lost friends, family members, neighbors, and coworkers "all" that Jesus has commanded us (see Matt. 28:18-20). If that was you, there's good news: you don't have to do this alone. In fact, you shouldn't. The wonderful truth about our witness to the lost is that it is a community project. God has made us a part of a body of believers, and we are called to teach the gospel together. So our next step in the disciple-making process is to tie our lost friends into our relationships with our Christian brothers and sisters in the church....Keep Reading

Teaching the Gospel to the Lost

Over the last few weeks, I've been painting a picture of how we can practically apply our wonderful responsibility of sharing the gospel with the lost in a simple, step-by-step approach. By following these steps I believe each of us can obey Jesus' radical call to make disciples by simply interacting with the lost people who are already in our lives in intentional, Jesus-imitating, gospel-focused ways. So after we intentionally touch base with the lost, begin to winsomely talk with the lost, and seek to sincerely befriend the lost by interacting with them in meaningful ways at our dinner (or breakfast, lunch, snack, coffee, etc.) tables, we must teach them about the truths of the gospel in a way that relates to their lives....Keep Reading

Talking Winsomely With the Lost

Last week, we discussed the importance of engaging with the lost with the intent of making disciples of Jesus. We talked about how we need to make it a priority to prayerfully and intentionally touch base with those around us, just as Jesus did. Just as Jesus "looked up" towards Zacchaeus as he passed through Jericho on his way to Jerusalem (see Luke 19:5) we must take the time and effort to look towards the lost that we pass by every day in our neighborhoods, at work, or even at home....Keep Reading

A Progressive Approach to Making Disciples

If you've been with us at Redeemer Church for a bit, you may have heard us use the term "disciple-making disciple" as a way to encapsulate what we believe is our role as followers of Jesus in our God-created, fallen, yet redeemed and soon to be restored world. As I've explained elsewhere, as we seek to follow Jesus in his mission of redemption for the world, we are to draw upon the awesome power of the Holy Spirit to make disciples of Jesus, just as he did when he was on earth....Keep Reading

Does the World See Christ Through Us?

Walking purposefully along the winding sidewalk towards the host hotel for my final day at The Gospel Coalition’s national women’s conference, I was stopped by an inquisitive taxi driver who looked at my name tag and asked me what was going on inside. As if to aid me in my answer, I held out my nametag for him to read and replied “It’s an event put on by The Gospel Coalition and it’s for women.”...Keep Reading

One Way to Imitate God: Pursue Others

For those of you who were not present to hear Jesse's message on Sunday, please do yourselves a favor and listen to it here. It was simply and profoundly inspiring. As he reminded us about God's relentless and merciful pursuit of us in our wanderings and rebellion, my soul was stirred afresh as I was reminded of the wonder and the power of God's great love for us, for me....Keep Reading

They Will Listen

On Sunday, we completed our inspiring series through the book of Acts. In this second volume of Luke's theological history of the birth of the Spirit-filled church, we've seen over and over again the Holy Spirit indwelling and propelling the church forward to extend the bounds of God's kingdom. And as we were reminded about on Sunday, all of this came on the heals of God's promises to His church through Luke. ...Keep Reading

Commemorating Dr. King's Dream 50 Years Later

It was 50 years ago today that, arguably, one of the greatest speeches in American history was given on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Today we contemplate that historic day. A Praying People

Along with evangelism prayer can often seem like the most excruciating discipline of a Christian's life. But perhaps unlike evangelism it is not so much a result of forgetful negligence, but rather our seemingly half-hearted, faith-deficient offerings before God that lead us to feel God's proverbial pebble in our shoe...Keep Reading
